Paving Rossmoyne from our Landsdale base
IBP Paving lays driveways, paths and patios and installs soakwells in Rossmoyne, though the suburb is a long way from home for us. Our base is in Landsdale, about 26 km north, so Rossmoyne jobs are taken by arrangement. Send us the job details first, with a few photos and approximate sizes, and we will tell you plainly whether we can book it and roughly when. The standard of work does not change with the distance: over 20 years of paving experience and a lifetime warranty on workmanship apply here as they do in our home suburbs.
How Rossmoyne got its name and its houses
The name came long before the houses. Developer V W Webb devised Rossmoyne in 1937 after a family trip to Scotland, and used it when the subdivision went on the market in 1955. The suburb was gazetted in 1960 and grew quickly around Rossmoyne Senior High School, which was built in 1967 and 1968. That timeline matters for paving. Many original Rossmoyne driveways and paths are likely to have been down for 50 to 60 years, some with later patches, widenings and extensions laid over the top in whatever material was handy at the time.
Sand between the Canning River and Bull Creek
Rossmoyne is bounded by the Canning River to the north and by Bull Creek to the west. Away from the water the ground is likely to be Bassendean sand, grey, loose and quick to drain, and it accepts soakwells well. Near the foreshore and the creek the water table tends to sit higher, so a soakwell that suits a lot on higher ground may sit too close to groundwater on a low one. We look at each site before settling on a design, and on the damper blocks we spread the volume across shallower units rather than going deep. The coast is roughly 11 km away, probably too far for salt to drive paver choice.
Driveway and drainage work in a 1960s suburb
After five or six decades, original paving often shows familiar wear: sunken wheel tracks, edges that have dropped away at the kerb, cracked concrete strips patched with pavers, and old soakwells that have silted up or were never sized for an extended roof. For driveways we often recommend a replacement on a new compacted limestone base, because bases from that era were frequently thin or mixed with garden soil. Where the pavers are still in good order, a lift and relay keeps the character of the house and reuses the material.
New hard surface sends more water to the same spot, so we size and add soakwells and surface drains as part of the job rather than leaving it to chance. Front entries and side courtyards in clay brick or limestone are other jobs worth planning when owners renovate.

Crossover approval and street trees in Canning
Rossmoyne falls within the City of Canning. The City asks for an approved stormwater drainage plan on all developments and expects most lots to dispose of stormwater on site with soakwells. If a lot has an overland flow path, defined as 300 mm or more from road level to lot level, the lot is designed for a 1 in 20 year storm with a coefficient of 0.0150 on the impervious area; without one the design moves to a 1 in 100 year storm and an engineer certified plan. Our page on soakwell requirements across Perth shows how that compares with other councils.
A new or rebuilt crossover in Canning needs approval before any work, lodged at least 10 business days ahead, and building without it risks a fine of up to $5,000. The City's inspector may ask for pavers to be lifted at any three spots to check the sub-base, so we build the base expecting it to be seen.
The City plants, prunes and maintains street trees. We plan driveway edges around their roots, and any verge paving stays at least 2 m from an existing trunk and within the City's limit of 33 percent of the verge, footpath and crossover included, with written approval obtained first.
