Driveway paving contractors for Perth homes
IBP Paving, the trading name of IconBuild Projects Pty Ltd, supplies and lays driveway pavers across Perth's northern suburbs from Landsdale, or lays pavers you have already bought. Over 20 years on Perth sand, fully licensed, and our lifetime workmanship warranty covers the work we do. Driveways are the biggest part of our brick paving service and the first thing most people ask about when they look for paving in Perth.
A driveway job with us includes removal of the old surface, compacted road base, screeded bedding sand, 60 mm pavers in herringbone, concrete edge restraints, joint sand, and the crossover between the kerb and your boundary, which sits on council land and follows council rules. The right paver for a Perth driveway: thickness, material and pattern
Thickness: 60 mm is the standard
50 mm is the minimum for a car driveway, 60 mm is preferred, and 80 mm interlocking pavers are for boats, caravans and trucks. Midland Brick's guidance is 60 mm for driveways and 40 mm for paths. The CMAA Surface Requirements for Pavers factsheet sets residential driveway pavers at a 3 kN minimum breaking load and 40 mm, and commercial vehicle pavers at 5 kN and 60 mm. The City of Wanneroo and City of Swan crossover specifications both require a minimum 60 mm paver, so we lay 60 mm across the whole driveway rather than stepping down inside the boundary.

Clay or concrete
Clay pavers suit a driveway at 50 to 60 mm in herringbone on a compacted base; the WA made range is Midland Brick Heavy Duty Clay Pavers in Red and Golden Dune. In concrete, Masterpave Classic 60 handles cars, and Interlock 80 and Easilock 80 take heavier loads. Soft sandstone and thin travertine do not belong under tyres on sand; for a stone look use granite setts or reconstituted limestone at 50 mm or more, see granite paving and limestone paving. The full comparison is on the brick paving page.
Herringbone for wheel loads
Herringbone interlocks in both directions, so pavers cannot creep under a turning tyre. Stretcher bond lines the joints up and can rut under wheel loads, so it stays on paths and patios. At 45 degrees herringbone gives the strongest interlock with more cuts; at 90 degrees it needs fewer cuts and still suits a driveway. Every driveway gets a border or soldier course. More on herringbone, stretcher bond and in our pattern guide.
Crossovers: council rules and contributions in Wanneroo, Joondalup, Swan and Stirling
The crossover is the strip between the road kerb and your front boundary. It sits on council land and is built to the council's specification. Under the Local Government (Uniform Local Provisions) Regulations 1996 a council is obliged to bear 50 per cent of the cost, as estimated by the local government, of a standard crossing. Brick paved crossovers are permitted in all four councils below. The rules are correct at the time of writing; we check them before we quote.

City of Wanneroo
Urban residential crossovers may be concrete or brick paving: minimum 60 mm heavy duty pavers on a 20 to 40 mm sand bed over at least 100 mm of crushed limestone or rock, edge restraints 250 mm wide and at least 80 mm deep, new materials only. Width is 3.0 to 6.0 m at the property line with a 2 per cent rise from kerb to boundary and 1.5 m clearance from street trees. The City may contribute to a first crossover, claimed in writing within six months with proof of payment; the amount is not published in the documents we have read. The City will not replace paving bricks in the road reserve damaged by later works.
City of Joondalup
No application is needed to modify an existing crossover; non standard designs go to Planning Services for a 10 to 15 working day check. Clay or concrete pavers are permitted, but the apron and kerb must be grey pre mix concrete. Width is 3.0 to 6.0 m. The footpath stays continuous, which a contrasting brick border can define, with a 2 per cent positive grade over 3.0 m and a maximum driveway gradient of 1:4 inside the lot. The City pays a one off $375 towards a first crossover or the replacement of an old bitumen one, claimed within six months with proof of payment. No contribution for a second crossover.
City of Swan
The location is assessed with the building licence and a second crossover needs its own application. Concrete or clay solid pavers at a minimum 60 mm (schedule 60 to 76 mm) go on 25 mm of sand over 150 mm of limestone or rock, with a concrete beam between the road and the paving, new materials only. Width is 3.0 to 6.0 m or 40 per cent of the frontage, whichever is less, and 3.5 m clear of verge trees. Guildford crossovers must be red asphalt, red concrete or red brick paving. The City contributes $400 to the first residential crossover and $550 for commercial or industrial, one payment per crossover.
City of Stirling
A Crossover Installation Application must be approved before a crossover is built or modified, approval is valid for two years, and generally one crossover per street frontage is permitted. Clay pavers must be heavy duty units suitable for commercial traffic with a 10 year manufacturer's guarantee, laid with 2 to 4 mm gaps. Width is 3.0 to 6.0 m for a single residence, and the crossover must contrast with the verge treatment. The contribution is 50 per cent of the cost of a standard 3 m wide grey concrete crossover, first crossover or bitumen replacement only, claimed within 12 months of completion.

We build the crossover to the council's drawing and give you the invoice and photos the contribution claim asks for. The full process is in what is a crossover, verge paving rules are on our landscaping page, and the stormwater rules for the same four councils are on our Wanneroo, Joondalup, Swan and Stirling soakwell pages.
How we build a driveway on Perth sand
- Strip and check the sub grade. Most of the northern corridor is deep, free draining Bassendean sand, with Spearwood sand over Tamala limestone towards the coast. On estates built since about 2005 we check for uncompacted fill, the usual cause of early sinking on new builds.
- Road base under the whole driveway, not only the crossover. Paths can go straight to sand; driveways cannot.
- Washed yellow paving sand screeded to a fall of 1:60 to 1:80 away from the garage and house.
- 60 mm pavers in herringbone from the straightest edge, 2 to 3 mm joints, cuts at the border.
- Concrete haunching or a mortared border on every free edge, which is what stops a driveway spreading.
- Plate compaction and joint sand, with polymeric sand as an option against ants and weeds.
- Stormwater stays on your lot. Runoff goes to a grated drain and its own soakwell or an approved outlet, never onto a neighbour's land or the verge. We install soakwells under or beside the driveway in the same visit and size the drainage for the paved area in the quote.

Exposed aggregate and liquid limestone are not materials we lay. Pavers win on repairability: a sunken section is lifted and relaid with the same units, where a slab is cut and patched. See our guide to choosing pavers.

Cost drivers: old surface removal, road base depth, paver thickness, edge restraint, the crossover and soakwells. As an indicative example, a 50 square metre driveway in concrete pavers at the $75 to $110 band comes to $3,750 to $5,500 supplied and laid, before old driveway removal, the crossover or a soakwell. New driveway, relay or repair?
A sunken or spreading driveway with sound pavers is usually a lift and relay, and a single dip a sunken paving repair. "Driveway resurfacing" is a concrete and asphalt term; pavers are relaid, not resurfaced. Pavers over a sound concrete driveway are possible where thresholds and crossover levels allow, otherwise the slab comes out. Strata driveways and forklift loads are on commercial and strata paving; anything that has failed is on paving repairs.
