Stone wall cladding, supplied and laid
Stone cladding is a face of thin natural or manufactured stone fixed to a wall that already stands up on its own. The wall does the structural work; the stone gives it the look of solid stonework. Perth homeowners use it on front walls and piers, entry statements, fireplace and BBQ surrounds, alfresco feature walls, fences and the exposed face of retaining walls.
Most Perth businesses that rank for stone cladding are suppliers that sell the stone. IBP Paving supplies and lays it. We have worked from Landsdale for over 20 years on paving, walls and outdoor areas, and our lifetime workmanship warranty covers the preparation, the fixing and the finish.
Panels, ledgestone and loose stone
Cladding comes in three broad formats, each with its own look and cost.
- Stackstone panels. Thin strips of stone bonded into a panel, light and quick to fix. Freo Stone's Perth range, for example, comes in Hawaiian Swirl, Everest, White Quartz, Copper and Desert, each at 600 x 150 mm, with pre cut corners available in every colour.
- Ledgestone and Z panels. The mid tier in Parto Stone's Perth cost guide, priced between lightweight panels and loose stone.
- Loose natural stone. Individual pieces laid one by one, with the highest labour cost of the three.
Other Perth lines include Remastone's natural stack stone, ledge stone, stone veneer and travertine cladding, and Midland Brick's Cultured Stone, a manufactured stone veneer fixed with its own bonding agent and mesh. We can supply and lay stone from Perth suppliers such as Freo Stone, or fix stone you have already bought. Natural stone varies: Freo Stone notes that colour can change from crate to crate and month to month, so pick your stone in a showroom, not from a photo.
Travertine wall cladding
Mataka lists travertine cladding in Classic, Noce, Light Noce, Red, Yellow and Silver for feature walls, facades, fireplaces and entry statements, in 15 mm tiles such as 610 x 406 and 800 x 400 mm or in a French pattern. Two choices shape the wall. Vein cut stone shows straight, linear bands that must run one way; cross cut gives a cloudy, blended pattern. Filled travertine has its natural holes packed with resin or cement for a smoother face that is easier to clean, which suits splashbacks and shower walls; unfilled keeps the pitted texture and suits exterior cladding.

Where cladding works around a Perth home
The best candidates are sound but plain walls: a tired rendered front fence, brick piers beside a driveway, a block BBQ bench, a fireplace breast or a retaining wall facing the alfresco.
Cladding a retaining wall does not change the rules for the wall itself. WA councils such as the City of Fremantle and City of Vincent advise that a wall retaining no more than 500 mm, not associated with other building work and not protecting adjoining land, does not need a building permit. Over 500 mm it needs a permit and a structural engineer's design, and Fremantle wants an engineer on every retaining wall. Perth sand, salt, sun and heritage streets
Cladding adds weight to a wall, but the wall's own footing carries it. In the northern suburbs around Landsdale that footing sits in Bassendean sand; along the coast it sits in Spearwood sand over Tamala Limestone. A wall that has already cracked or dropped will crack the stone with it, so we check the footing before quoting.
Within about 1 to 2 km of the ocean, salt laden wind drives efflorescence and surface weathering on outdoor paving, so on coastal homes in suburbs like Scarborough and Hillarys exterior cladding gets a penetrating sealer only. Perth's summer UV and winter rain are why exterior systems often add a membrane and flashing behind the stone. Many older Perth homes are double brick, and uneven or painted brick needs a render coat before stone will bond.
We found no council rule specific to stone cladding. In the City of Stirling's Heritage Protection Area, which covers most of Mount Lawley, Menora and Inglewood, renovations need a development application, and the City of Bayswater has Character Protection Areas. Check with council before cladding a street facing wall in those areas.

How we install stone cladding
- Check and prepare the wall. The surface must be even and clean, so we pressure wash it, render uneven or painted brick, and prime where needed. Stud walls get fibre cement sheeting and a membrane, and a structural engineer signs off before any stone goes on.
- Dry lay and mix. We dry lay a row and mix stone from different boxes so no shade clumps together.
- Corners first. Pre cut corners go on first, alternating their long and short returns, then we work to the centre.
- Bottom to top in a brick pattern. Panels are staggered like brickwork so the joins disappear, held level with a ledger board and spacers.
- The right fixing. Adhesive suited to the stone and the wall. Heavy stone over roughly 40 kg/m² may need epoxy mortar and mechanical ties instead.
- Cure, then seal if needed. The wall stays dry and uncleaned for at least 7 days. Outside we use a penetrating sealer only, never a wet look sealer, and never acid.
Freo Stone advises that most of its products do not need sealing and that Crommelin sealers void its warranty, so we follow the supplier's sealer list for whichever stone you choose. Our sealing and cleaning service can look after the wall and the paving in front of it together.

Cladding, a limestone wall or a full landscape
Clad a wall when it is sound and you want it to look like stone. If you need a new wall anyway, a limestone retaining wall can be the finished face on its own. A leaning or cracked wall needs retaining wall repairs first. If the feature wall is part of a new garden, paving and alfresco, our landscaping and paving service plans the lot.
