Granite paving installers, supply and lay
Perth stone yards sell granite pavers. IBP Paving installs them. Granite is part of our stone paving in Perth and the paving services we have run from Landsdale for over 20 years, fully licensed, with a lifetime workmanship warranty on the bed and the laying.
Supply and lay gives you one quote and one warranty for the stone and the work. Lay only means you choose the granite at a showroom and we lay it, and the laying is still covered. For either, request a free site measure or call 0449 020 336.
What granite gives you
Granite is the hardest and densest of the paving stones. It has very low porosity, so it does not soak up oil, rust or leaf stains the way limestone and sandstone do, and it is colour stable, so a grey granite driveway laid today is the same grey in twenty years. Sealing is optional rather than required.
The finish decides whether it is safe. Flamed or exfoliated granite has had its surface heat treated into a fine texture that grips when wet. Polished granite is a mirror and is slippery outdoors. Colours run from grey through black to white. Dark granite gets hot in Perth sun; light granite less so. Granite is also sold as cobbles and setts, the small blocks used for borders and aprons.
Perth ranges we can source: UrbanStone, with a showroom in Osborne Park, lists granite pavers in its WA range and an Endurastone bullnose pool coping in Basalt Granite at 600 x 300 x 40 mm. Parto Stone in Osborne Park stocks granite pavers. Ranges change, so ask us for current samples. If the budget does not stretch to natural granite, Midland Brick's Masterpave Granite and Flagstone Granite are concrete pavers with a granite look, and we lay them as brick paving.
Granite for driveways, entries and steps
This is where granite earns its price. Two builds carry cars: 30 to 40 mm granite on a concrete slab, or 50 mm plus granite on a compacted base. Mortar laid granite on a slab is the hardest wearing option in the stone range for a Perth driveway where a stone look is wanted, and it takes turning tyres without the surface marking.
Cobbles and setts suit crossover aprons and borders, where they take the kerb transition and frame the field. On steps and entries we use a flamed finish for grip and a light colour where feet will be bare. The base build, the crossover rules and the council paperwork for the verge are on our driveway paving page.
Granite in Perth conditions
Heat. Dark granite is the hottest surface in the stone range, so for a pool surround we use light granite in a flamed finish only, and often steer people to travertine instead; see pool paving and coping.
Salt and pool chemicals. Granite's low porosity means it resists salt attack and staining far better than limestone or sandstone, which is why sealing is optional. On coastal sites within 1 to 2 km of the ocean we still use washed bedding materials, because the salt in unwashed sand attacks the joints and the bed even when the stone shrugs it off.
Sand. On Perth's free draining sand a 50 mm plus granite paver can go on a flexible sand bed over road base, like brick paving. Thinner stone goes on a slab. Landsdale and the northern corridor sit on deep Bassendean sand; see our Landsdale and Hillarys pages for inland and coastal specifics.
How IBP lays granite
Thickness picks the method. Flexible, for 50 mm plus granite: compacted sub grade, road base under vehicle areas, washed yellow paving sand, restrained edges and joint sand. Rigid, for 30 to 40 mm granite, steps and coping: a reinforced slab laid to fall, a sand cement bed or flexible adhesive, full bed contact and grouted joints. Either way the paving falls away from the house and runoff goes to lawn, garden or a soakwell, since Perth councils require stormwater kept on site. We confirm the method and the specification for your site at the measure.
Granite paving cost in Perth
Honest answer first: the research behind this page found no published Perth supply and lay band for granite, and we are not going to invent one. Granite carries the highest material cost of the common paving stones and is usually mortar laid, so it sits at the top of the stone range, and we quote it per job after measuring.
For context only, as indicative Perth industry ranges and not IBP's price list: paving overall in Perth runs about $63 to $170 per square metre supplied and laid, typical $105, and travertine, the other mortar laid stone, runs $185 to $370. The drivers in a granite quote are grade and finish, thickness, slab or compacted base, cutting, steps and coping, and access. Our Perth paving cost guide keeps the published bands current.
