Brick paving contractors for Perth homes
IBP Paving is the trading name of IconBuild Projects Pty Ltd, a Landsdale based brick paving contractor with over 20 years on Perth sand. We are fully licensed, every job carries our lifetime workmanship warranty, and brick paving is the core of what we do as part of our paving services in Perth.
We are an installer, not a paver yard. We supply and lay, or we lay pavers you have already bought from a Perth supplier. Either way you get one crew, one quote and one warranty. Most of our work is across the northern suburbs, and we travel further for larger jobs.

What brick paving means in Perth
The words trip people up. In Perth, "brick pavers" usually means clay pavers, fired from the same material as house bricks. Most of the residential paving actually sold here is concrete: pressed or wet cast pavers that come in brick sizes and in much larger formats. The Perth market is concrete dominated and clay is the niche, premium choice. When a quote says brick paving, ask which material it is priced on.
Clay pavers
Clay pavers are kiln fired, so the colour runs all the way through and does not fade under Perth sun. They are harder and denser than concrete. The trade offs: slightly more size variation from piece to piece, a format that is mostly 230 by 115 mm, edges that can chip if a paver is dropped during laying, and a white efflorescence bloom on new clay that usually washes out over the first few months. Clay costs more per square metre. The main WA made clay range is Midland Brick Heavy Duty Clay Pavers in Red and Golden Dune (Brikmakers, the other local clay name, is now part of Midland Brick).
Concrete pavers
Concrete pavers are cheaper per square metre and come in far more sizes, colours and finishes, from 200 by 100 mm brick formats up to 400 by 400 mm and larger slabs. The colour is in the surface layer, so it can fade and wear over 25 to 40 years unless the paving is sealed. Perth ranges we can source include Midland Brick Masterpave Classic 40, 50 and 60 (Charcoal, Limestone, Pewter, Steel Grey), Pavestone Classic (Autumn Blend, Heritage Red), Promenade Classic 40 and 60, Flagstone Classic, and Interlock 80 and Easilock 80 for commercial loads. UrbanStone (Brickworks, Jandakot plant, Osborne Park showroom) makes wet cast concrete pavers, including the Accolade colours (Cloud Grey, Desert Sand, Ivory White, Golden Tan, Natural Beige) and a pool paver range. Ranges change, so ask us for current samples.

Clay or concrete: a short comparison
| Factor | Clay pavers | Concrete pavers |
|---|---|---|
| Colour retention | Colour fired through, does not fade | Surface colour, can fade without sealing |
| Price per square metre | Higher | Lower |
| Sizes and finishes | Mostly 230 by 115 mm, few finishes | Many sizes, colours and finishes |
| Hardness and lifespan | Harder and denser, 50 years or more | 25 to 40 years with surface wear |

Both work on Perth sand bases, so the choice usually comes down to look and budget. We go deeper on the main Perth brands in our guide to paver brands in Perth. For limestone, travertine, granite and sandstone see our stone paving page.
Pavers for coastal suburbs: salt and exposure grades
Within roughly one to two kilometres of the ocean, salt laden wind drives efflorescence and surface spalling on pavers. Hillarys, Sorrento, Mullaloo, Ocean Reef, Mindarie and Scarborough all sit within about 1.5 km of the beach, and we treat them as high salt sites.
Clay masonry has published durability classes. The Midland Brick and Think Brick durability factsheet grades bricks as General Purpose or Exposure, and classes land within 100 m of a non surf coast or within 1 km of a surf coast as Severe Marine, which calls for Exposure grade. That classification is written for bricks in walls. Paver durability sits under AS/NZS 4455.2 and no Perth supplier publishes a paver salt grade; UrbanStone lists its pool pavers as General Purpose.
So our practical approach for coastal and bore water sites is this: dense wet cast concrete or Exposure grade clay pavers, washed bedding sand, sand swept joints rather than mortar, and a penetrating sealer once the paving has dried out. We can seal as part of the job or later through our paving sealing and cleaning service. See our Hillarys and Mindarie pages for coastal specifics.

Where we lay brick paving
Driveways
50 mm pavers are the minimum for cars, 60 mm is preferred, and 80 mm for boats, caravans and trucks. Road base goes under the bedding sand and herringbone handles the wheel loads. The crossover on the verge needs separate council paperwork, which we explain on the driveway paving page.

Patios and alfrescos
In WA an alfresco is the covered area under the main roof; a patio is freestanding or under a pergola. Both take 40 mm pavers on compacted sand, light colours to keep the heat down, and falls away from the house slab. See patio and alfresco paving.

Courtyards
Enclosed spaces behind character homes and townhouses need careful drainage because there is no lawn to take the runoff. Large format pavers make a small courtyard feel bigger. See courtyard paving.

Garden paths and walkways
Paths run 900 to 1,200 mm wide, as laid brick or as stepping pavers set in gravel. Pavers suit the side of the house over water and sewer runs, because they lift and relay where concrete must be cut. See garden path paving.

Pool surrounds and coping
Textured or shot blast concrete pavers with bullnose coping, a P4 minimum wet barefoot slip rating, and finished levels that keep the 1.2 m pool barrier height intact. See pool paving and coping.

Commercial and strata
80 mm interlocking pavers such as Interlock 80 and Easilock 80 for forklift and vehicle loads, plus relays and repairs for body corporates. See commercial and strata paving.

We also do paving led landscaping, including limestone retaining walls and garden beds, so one contractor handles the whole yard.
Brick paving patterns
Pattern is a structural choice, not only a look: the joints decide whether a field locks together under a turning tyre or creeps apart.
Herringbone
Herringbone interlocks in both directions and resists wheel creep, which makes it the driveway default. Laid at 45 degrees it gives the strongest interlock but needs more cuts and wastes more pavers; at 90 degrees there are fewer cuts and it still performs well under cars. Perth cost guides report a labour uplift of 10 to 15 per cent for herringbone and other cut heavy patterns, which is indicative only. Read more on our herringbone paving page.
Stretcher bond
Joints line up in one direction, like a brick wall. It has the fewest cuts, so it is the economical choice for paths, patios and alfrescos. It can rut under turning tyres, so we do not recommend it for driveways. See stretcher bond paving.
Basketweave
Pairs of pavers alternate direction to give a heritage look that suits 230 by 115 mm clay and older Perth homes. It has the weakest interlock of the three, so it stays on patios and paths. See basketweave paving.
On every job we finish the edges with a border course, usually a soldier course laid end on, which frames the field and gives the edge restraint something straight to hold. Our illustrated pattern guide shows each layout with its cuts and waste.
How we lay brick paving on Perth sand
This is the part that decides whether paving is still flat in 15 years. The depths and materials below are typical Perth practice; we confirm the specification for your site at the measure.
- Site and soil. Landsdale and the northern corridor sit on Bassendean sand: deep, pale grey and free draining, which is why flexible sand laid paving is the Perth norm. The City of Wanneroo lists Wanneroo, Ashby, Tapping and Wangara on this unit, and Landsdale, Darch and Madeley are the same sand. Coastal suburbs sit on Spearwood sand over Tamala limestone, where caprock can be shallow. On new estates we check for imported fill, because paving laid on uncompacted fill sinks.
- Excavation and sub grade. We strip to depth, remove old paving or turf, and compact the natural sand with a plate compactor.
- Sub base. Compacted road base goes under driveways and anything that carries vehicles. Paths and patios on compacted natural sand can go straight to bedding sand.
- Bedding sand. Washed yellow paving sand, not brickies sand, which holds too much clay and fines and never compacts properly. It is screeded to a fall of 1:60 to 1:80 away from the house.
- Laying and cutting. The pattern is set out from the straightest edge with 2 to 3 mm joints and the cuts go at the borders. The CMAA surface requirements factsheet treats lippage over 5 mm between pavers as defective, and we work well inside that.
- Edge restraints. Concrete haunching or a mortared border course on every free edge so the field cannot spread.
- Compaction and joint sand. We plate compact the laid field, sweep in joint sand, and compact again. Polymeric or joint stabilising sand is an option that resists ants and weeds.
- Drainage and soakwells. Perth councils require stormwater to be retained on site, so paved runoff goes to lawn, garden or a soakwell. We install soakwells under and beside new paving in the same visit, and size drainage for paved areas as part of the quote.

A quote is built from the measured area plus wastage, the paver you choose, the sub base and bedding sand, excavation and removal of old paving, edge restraints and cutting, access, and soakwells if the site needs them. As an indicative worked example, a 50 square metre driveway in concrete pavers at the $75 to $110 band lands between $3,750 and $5,500 supplied and laid, before extras such as old paving removal or a soakwell.
If you are comparing quotes, a good one itemises base depth, sand type, edge restraint and where the water goes. We walk through the line items in paving quotes explained and keep the bands current in our Perth paving cost guide.
Why choose IBP Paving
Over 20 years laying paving in Perth, based in Landsdale and working across the northern suburbs. Fully licensed. One contractor for the paving, the soakwells, the limestone walls and any later repairs, so one party is accountable.
Our lifetime workmanship warranty covers our own work: the compacted base, the edge restraints and the joints. On Perth sand that is what fails, not the paver itself. If paving laid by someone else has sunk, we relay and repair brick paving too.
"Highly Recommended! IBP recently completed all the paving at my property, and I couldn't be happier with the results. The work was absolutely perfect, clean, precise, and professionally done." Moey Husy
"Very happy with the job and I would highly recommend to anyone. Idris and team are very professional, efficient and competent." Kartik Patel
Brick paving across Perth's northern suburbs
From Landsdale we cover the City of Wanneroo, City of Joondalup, City of Stirling and City of Swan suburbs. The 1980s and 1990s estates in Alexander Heights, Ballajura and Marangaroo are now at driveway relay age, and the 2000s estates in Landsdale, Darch and Madeley are reaching their first relay.
