What stretcher bond paving is
Stretcher bond lays pavers in straight rows, with each row offset by half a paver so that no joint lines up with the joint in the row before it. It is the bond every brick wall is built in. Running bond is the same pattern under its other name. For long format pavers there is a third offset variant, where each row steps by a third of a paver instead of a half, which spreads the joints more evenly along a long run.
IBP Paving lays it as part of our brick paving in Perth and across the rest of our paving services.
Stretcher bond or stack bond
Stack bond is the other straight row pattern. Instead of offsetting each row, it lines the joints up in both directions so the pavers sit in a grid. It looks modern and it suits square and large format pavers, but it is unforgiving: because every joint runs through in both directions, every difference in paver size shows as a joint that wanders. Stack bond needs very consistent pavers, which in practice means wet cast concrete such as UrbanStone's 400 x 400 and larger formats, or porcelain pavers, which other suppliers sell and we do not stock.
Stretcher bond hides the same differences. With no joint running through in the second direction, a paver that is a millimetre long or short simply shifts the next joint along by a millimetre and nobody notices. That is why it is the safer pattern for clay pavers, which carry natural size variation from the kiln.
| Factor | Stretcher bond | Stack bond |
|---|---|---|
| Joints | Line up in one direction only | Line up in both directions |
| Size variation | Hidden by the offset | Shows in every joint |
| Pavers | Any rectangle, clay or concrete | Very consistent large format only |
| Look | Classic, like a brick wall | Modern grid |
| Cuts | Half pavers at alternate row ends | Edge cuts only where the run does not divide |

Where stretcher bond suits, and why not driveways
Paths, patios, alfrescos and courtyards. In WA the alfresco is the covered area under the main roof, and stretcher bond in 400 x 400 or 500 x 500 mm concrete pavers is the usual choice there. The suburbs where we lay the most of it are the 2000s estates, Landsdale, Madeley and Hocking, where alfresco extensions and first relays are now common, and the new villages in Ellenbrook and Aveley.
What stretcher bond does not do is carry cars. The joints run straight through in one direction, so a turning tyre can push a whole row along the joint and rut the surface. For a driveway the pattern has to interlock in two directions, which is herringbone. The application pages have the detail: patio and alfresco paving, garden path paving and courtyard paving.
Fewest cuts and least waste
In stretcher bond the only cuts are the half paver that starts every second row and whatever is needed along the far edge. There are no diagonal cuts at all, so the offcut from the start of one row is the half paver that starts the next.
We make it work harder by running the long edge of the paver with the long edge of the area and setting out from the house wall, so the cuts fall at the garden edge where a border or a planting bed hides them. Our illustrated pattern guide shows the cut lines for each pattern.
How IBP lays stretcher bond on Perth sand
A flexible sand bed on Perth's free draining sand: compacted sub grade, washed yellow paving sand rather than brickies sand, screeded to a fall of 1:60 to 1:80 away from the slab or house, 2 to 3 mm joints, a border course or haunched edge on every free side, then compaction and joint sand.
For foot traffic areas 40 mm pavers are enough. Midland Brick positions 40 mm for paths and 60 mm for driveways, and its 40 mm ranges include Masterpave Classic 40 and Promenade Classic 40; ranges change, so ask for current samples. Over a long run we string a line along every third row to keep the half offset true. Runoff goes to lawn, garden or a soakwell, since Perth councils require stormwater kept on site.
What stretcher bond costs
These are indicative Perth industry ranges, not IBP's price list. Published 2026 Perth cost guides put concrete pavers at about $75 to $110 per square metre supplied and laid and clay at $130 to $210. Stretcher bond is the baseline pattern: the 10 to 15 per cent uplift those guides apply to cut heavy patterns does not apply here. We quote on site, and the bands are kept current in our Perth paving cost guide. To get a figure, request a free site measure or call 0449 020 336.
