Limestone retaining wall cost per lineal metre
Perth retaining walls are quoted by the lineal metre of wall at a given height. As an indicative Perth industry range from the whatsthedamage.com.au Perth cost table, a limestone block wall about 1 m high runs roughly $295 to $630 per lineal metre, with about $440 typical. That is the figure for the wall itself: blocks, mortar, footing and labour. Drainage, engineering, permits and demolition are added separately, and are covered below.
Two things about per metre pricing catch people out. First, height does not scale in a straight line. A 2 m wall is not twice the price of a 1 m wall, because the footing has to be wider and deeper, the lower courses need bigger blocks, and engineering and a permit come into the picture. A 1 m figure tells you nothing reliable about a 1.8 m wall. Second, block type matters: natural Tamala blocks usually cost more than reconstituted, before you consider the extra handling. The difference between the two is explained on limestone retaining walls.
None of these figures are IBP's prices. They are what Perth cost guides publish, and we quote each wall after a site visit. The service itself is described under retaining walls Perth.

The add ons: engineering, permits, drainage and demolition
All indicative Perth industry ranges, attributed, and none of them IBP's price list.
| Item | Indicative Perth industry range | When it applies |
|---|---|---|
| Drainage behind the wall | About $52 per lineal metre | Every wall. An ag drain, gravel and geofabric are not optional. |
| Demolition of an old wall | About $105 per lineal metre | Replacing a failed timber, brick or limestone wall. |
| Structural engineering | About $525 to $2,100 | Walls retaining more than 500 mm, and walls carrying a surcharge such as a driveway or pool. |
| Council building permit | About $470 to $1,900 | Walls retaining more than 500 mm, associated with other building work or protecting adjoining land. |
| Engineering plus permit, combined | About $1,500 to $3,000 | A second guide's combined figure for the same two items. |

The trigger for the big two is the rule Perth councils state: a retaining wall that retains no more than 500 mm of ground, is not associated with other building work and does not protect adjoining land does not need a building permit; otherwise it needs a permit and a structural engineer's design. The City of Fremantle fences and retaining walls page and the City of Vincent retaining wall advice page both put it in those terms. Engineering is also expected where a driveway, pool or building sits near the top of the wall, whatever the height, because the wall is carrying a load as well as soil. The three tests are unpacked on retaining wall approvals in WA.
A worked example
This is arithmetic on the indicative ranges above to show how a quote builds. It is an example, not a quote.
Take a 10 m limestone wall about 1 m high. At the typical $440 per lineal metre the wall itself is about $4,400. Drainage at $52 per metre adds about $520. Because it retains more than 500 mm, engineering and a permit apply, at roughly $1,000 to $4,000 depending on which guide and which end of the range. Indicative total: somewhere in the order of $6,000 to $9,000.
Now the same 10 m wall at 500 mm or less, on a lot where it is not tied to other building work and does not hold up the neighbour's land. The wall itself is cheaper per metre because there are fewer courses and a smaller footing, drainage still applies, and engineering and the permit drop out. That is the threshold made visible: the 500 mm line is worth several thousand dollars on a modest wall, which is why so many garden walls are designed to sit just under it. IBP quotes each wall on its own numbers.
What moves the price on Perth sand sites
- Height. Courses and footing size rise together, and the 500 mm line brings engineering and a permit with it.
- Block type. Natural Tamala costs more per block than reconstituted and is heavier to lay.
- Caprock. In Spearwood suburbs such as Duncraig and Woodvale, limestone can sit near the surface. Hitting rock changes the excavation and the footing.
- Drain run. The ag drain has to reach a soakwell or lawful discharge point, and a long run costs more than a short one. Where the water goes is covered under soakwells.
- Access. Block delivery and a mini excavator need a way in. Narrow lots on new estates such as Banksia Grove often mean hand carrying blocks, which is slower.
- Finishes. Render, capping blocks or a paved cap, and sealing, each add a line. Sealing is covered under paving sealing and cleaning.
- Tiered walls. Councils assess tiered walls on combined height, so two short steps can still need engineering as if they were one tall wall.
- Boundary walls. A wall on or near a boundary needs the neighbour's agreement and may need a permit regardless of height because it protects adjoining land.
How IBP quotes a retaining wall
We come to the site and measure the length, the retained height along the run and anything that will load the wall from above. We look for caprock and work out where the drain can discharge. The quote is then itemised: the wall per lineal metre, the footing, drainage, engineering and the permit where they apply, demolition of any old wall, and render or capping. IBP arranges the engineer's drawings where they are required. IBP Paving is based in Landsdale with over 20 years of experience, and every wall carries our lifetime workmanship warranty, which covers IBP's own work.
Cheaper options and when they are not
People ask what the cheapest retaining wall is. IBP builds limestone walls, natural and reconstituted, and does not build concrete panel and post or sleeper walls, so this page does not price those systems; a specialist in them will. What we will say is where not to save. Two of the three reasons Perth limestone walls fail are no drainage and undersized footings, and both are the first things a cheap quote leaves out. A wall rebuilt five years later costs its demolition, its drainage and its blocks all over again, which is set out on retaining wall repairs.
