Paving in South Guildford from our Landsdale base
For paving in South Guildford, IBP Paving builds driveways, courtyards and paths in clay brick, concrete pavers and natural stone, with the drainage designed at the same time. The suburb is about 16 km from us in Landsdale as the crow flies. That is further than our regular runs, so South Guildford work is by arrangement, and we ask for the job details before we book anything. All of it is backed by a lifetime workmanship warranty and more than 20 years on the tools.
Mixed housing south of the Helena
Our research does not record a single building era for South Guildford, and the housing is likely a mix of ages, so the work can vary from street to street. On older properties the usual job is a repair or relay of a brick driveway that has settled unevenly, or a path that clay movement has pushed out of line. On newer lots it is more often a fresh driveway, a paved side access, or a rear courtyard that needs to shed water quickly.
Across both, the common thread is water. Paving on this ground lasts when the base is deep, the falls are right and every square metre of hard surface has somewhere to drain. When we quote, we walk the block in the order rain does: roof, downpipes, driveway, then the lowest corner of the lot, and we price the drainage as part of the paving rather than as an extra.
Crossovers, verges and the $400 contribution
The City of Swan looks after South Guildford, and its crossover and verge rules are set out in a construction specification and verge guidelines.
A residential crossover is at least 3.0 m wide and no more than 6.0 m or 40 percent of the lot frontage, whichever is less. It must stay 3.5 m clear of verge trees, 0.5 m from light poles or services and 6 m from a street corner, and existing footpaths are not to be removed. Council contributes $400 towards the first residential crossover built to its specification. Paving a verge needs written permission through an Application to Alter Verge, with at least one 1 m by 1 m tree or garden opening per frontage, and asphalt, concrete or loose gravel verges are refused.
A tree near your planned driveway will not be taken out simply because it is in the way, unless there is no alternative, and residents must not prune or remove street trees themselves. We plan crossover positions around existing trees from the outset.

The type area for Guildford clay
Guildford, just over the river, is the type area that gives the Guildford Formation its name, and most of South Guildford typically sits on the same clay with Helena River alluvium on top. The Groundwater Atlas describes the north eastern urban corridor as Guildford Clay with limited groundwater yield and issues with salinity, acidity or staining, and on the river flats the water table is usually shallow.
The City's own soakwell guide puts storage at about 12.2 litres for each square metre of impervious area, rising to 0.0159 cubic metres per square metre at R30 or higher coding, and says the figure is based on sandy soil. It also warns that soakwells may not suit where groundwater sits above the base. On clay we test first, and if the ground will not take water we design drainage to an approved Council connection. South Guildford is also one of the suburbs covered by the City's drainage contribution policy. More on how soakwells behave in different ground is on our City of Swan soakwell requirements page.

Between the Helena River and Guildford Cemetery
The Helena River forms the line between South Guildford and Guildford, and Guildford Cemetery lies within South Guildford itself. Streets close to the river are where we take the most care with levels, keeping paving and any drainage structure above the wet ground. If you are in Guildford, Bassendean, Woodbridge, Hazelmere or High Wycombe, the same by arrangement approach applies; see areas we service for the full list.
