Paving in Craigie, about 9 km west of Landsdale
Craigie is about 9 km west of IBP Paving's base in Landsdale, a straightforward run across to the Whitfords side of the City of Joondalup. Most of our work here is renewal of a mature suburb: replacing driveways and crossovers, rebuilding patios as paved alfresco areas, and building limestone retaining walls where a sloping block was terraced decades ago. We have been paving in Perth for over 20 years and give a lifetime workmanship warranty on everything we lay.
Crossovers and verges under Joondalup's guidelines
A new driveway in Craigie usually means a new crossover, and the City of Joondalup is specific about what it accepts.
Crossovers may be clay or concrete pavers, coloured or exposed aggregate concrete or flagstone. Asphalt, gravel, crushed brick, compacted limestone, loose stone and polished finishes are not permitted, and aprons and kerbs must be grey pre-mix concrete. A single dwelling crossover is 3.0 to 6.0 m wide, at least 0.5 m from a side boundary, 6.0 m from an intersection kerb tangent and 1.0 m from pits, service boxes and poles, and the footpath must stay continuous. The City pays a one off $375 subsidy for a first crossover or for replacing an old bitumen crossover, claimed within six months.

Rebuilding a bitumen crossover in pavers alongside the driveway is one of the simpler ways to qualify for that subsidy. Modifying an existing crossover needs no application, though anything non standard goes to Planning Services first. Street trees are not pruned or removed for non essential crossovers or verge paving, and crossovers need a 1 to 1.5 m offset from them, so a big verge tree sets the layout.
Limestone underfoot and a few kilometres from the sea
Craigie most likely sits on the Spearwood sands of the north western corridor, yellow to brown sand over Tamala Limestone. The sand makes a firm base once compacted. The limestone is the variable: on some blocks it may be close to the surface, and a soakwell excavation or a footing for a retaining wall can meet rock. We plan for that by checking the ground at the soakwell positions first, and by designing wider, shallower units where rock is shallow. The water table is generally several metres down and we know of no lake or wetland in the suburb.
The City of Joondalup asks owners to keep stormwater within the property, suggests a downpipe for roughly every 15 square metres of roof with no more than 12 m between them, and publishes a table of six concrete soakwell sizes from 180 to 3100 litres for normal rainfall. Each unit should be set back from buildings and boundaries by at least its own width. The City of Joondalup soakwell requirements page has the table.

The coast is roughly 3.5 km to the west, close enough for light salt in the air. For exposed front areas we prefer dense, well made clay or concrete pavers, lay them on washed sand and recommend an occasional hose down to keep salt from building up on the surface.
One of the four Whitfords suburbs
When the State rezoned coastal land in 1969, the Whitfords area was divided into four new suburbs, and Craigie was one of them. Its name was chosen in 1970, after an early City of Wanneroo councillor, and Craigie Senior High School opened in 1976. Most of the housing went up in the years that followed, which is why so much of the paving in Craigie is reaching the end of its life at around the same time.
Fifty year old driveways, patios and garden walls
A driveway from Craigie's first decade is usually a replacement job. We remove the old pavers and base, lay and compact crushed limestone, and build a new driveway in 60 mm pavers that will take a modern car without rutting. Original patios are being roofed and repaved as alfresco areas with a soakwell for the new roof. Where a sloping block was terraced with timber sleepers that have since rotted, we replace them with limestone retaining walls that suit the local stone. Our retaining walls page covers heights and approvals.

Beldon, Padbury and nearby suburbs
