Trigg paving work from Landsdale
Trigg is about 13 km south west of IBP Paving in Landsdale, counted in a straight line. It is a beachside suburb, and the paving we are asked about here is driveways, pool surrounds, entertaining areas and the soakwells that have to go in with them. We follow City of Stirling drainage criteria, choose pavers that tolerate salt, and give every job a lifetime workmanship warranty, with over 20 years of Perth experience behind it.
Clarko Reserve and the shacks that moved east
Trigg's beachfront once had shacks along it. When they were demolished, their owners were given blocks further east in the new suburb, and the cleared land became Clarko Reserve. So the open ground along the foreshore is a product of that swap, and the houses that replaced the shacks are now themselves old enough to need new paving. For anyone renovating close to the reserve, the same thing applies as on the beach: wind carries salt and fine sand onto every outdoor surface, and paving with tight, well filled joints and a sealed face is far easier to sweep and hose clean than an open, textured finish.
Late 1940s onwards: what Trigg's houses need
Land in Trigg was first taken up in 1877, but the suburb itself was developed from the late 1940s. Most homes are therefore mature, and knock down rebuilds are part of the mix. Each stage brings its own paving.
- On original houses, worn driveways and paths are better replaced than repaired; see paving replacement.
- On rebuilds, the new home needs a driveway, side paths and an alfresco laid around fresh drainage.
- On lots with a pool, the surround is often the main job, in travertine or another stone that suits salt and bare feet; our pool paving page covers coping and drainage.

Soakwells under a Trigg driveway
Coastal lots are rarely generous, and on a rebuild the only space left for soakwells is often beneath the driveway. The City of Stirling allows that, with conditions.
All rainfall within a lot must be contained on site by soakwells or approved alternatives. Soakwells must be at least 1 m edge to edge from structures and boundaries, and any drainage located within or under a driveway must be trafficable and sit on an approved base. Residential crossovers may be grey or coloured concrete, heavy duty clay or concrete pavers or flagstone products, and asphalt is not permitted. A first crossover attracts a subsidy of 50% of a standard 3 m grey concrete crossover, claimed within 12 months.

In practice we set heavy duty soakwells on a compacted base, fit trafficable lids and pave over or around them so the lid lines up with the pattern. The 1 m clearance rules out tucking a unit against the boundary fence, so the layout is worked out before the driveway is designed. The City's standard formula is impervious area multiplied by 0.015 m, so a rebuild with 250 m2 of roof and paving needs 3.75 m3 of storage. For sizes and the rest of the criteria, read our City of Stirling soakwell requirements page, and for installation see soakwells.
Limestone ground, salt air and the bushland edge
Trigg Island and Trigg Bushland are likely both on limestone, and the residential ground is typically Quindalup sand over Tamala Limestone. That gives fast drainage and a firm base once compacted, but it also means a digger can hit rock part way down a soakwell hole. Groundwater near the coast is a saltwater wedge, so depth is more likely to be limited by rock than by water.
Most streets are likely within about 1 km of the ocean. We use exposure grade pavers, keep joints sand filled so moisture can escape, and recommend sealing. The City of Stirling closes Trigg Bushland on high fire risk days, so for homes beside it we suggest paving rather than mulch against the walls, giving a non combustible margin around the house.
